In Sept 2006, Drew and I backpacked for 5 days around Shoshone Lake.  In over 40 miles, we only saw one bald eagle.  The wildlife was abundant at the roadside for the tourists, but not in the backcountry.  We could hear all kinds of wildlife after dark, but we never saw any creatures (other than squirrels).  We had great weather, and saw very few other humans.  The geysers, thermals, and lake views made the trip worthwhile.
