2009On Feb 21, Drew & I participated in the virtual World Wide Triathlon. Since we were already scheduled for Strider's 10 K that morning, we opted to do a full Olympic distance triathlon. First we ran the 10 K in Ogden where it was 29 degrees and sunny. Drew completed the 10 K in 57:40; my time was 1:02:40. Drew had enough time to get to the vehicle & grab the camera to take some great photos of me crossing the finish line!
Next we drove to Layton's Surf and Swim and swam 70 laps (1 mile). Our swim was interrupted a few times by kids swimming across our lane, and once by the lifeguard moving us out of the "swim lesson" lane. It took us 1 hr 12 minutes minutes to complete the swim.
Next up: biking 25 miles on Antelope Island (using mountain bikes). We started on the causeway and rode 12.5 miles toward Garr Ranch. As we were biking, the wind picked up and the sun became obscured by light clouds. As a result the temperature subsequently dropped to a wind chill of 24 degrees. The last hour of biking was grueling. If there was any alternative, I'm sure we would have quit. But since we were riding an out-and-back, we had no option but to battle the head wind to get back to the car. It took us 2 hours 24 minutes to bike only 25 miles! However, the scenery was spectacular and we stopped to take a few photos. We saw some large white geese and other birds on the return, but our fingers were numb by that time and we were unable to operate the camera.
Since this was a "do it yourself" triathlon, Drew and I swam and biked together. The three sports were challenging, but we had a lot of fun exercising. The run started at 8 AM, and we finished biking at 3:15 PM. The only tragedy of the day was Drew's "waterproof" watch, which you can see in the photos.
I've also posted some
misc photos at the end.
